Chapter House, Kings Cross, recently underwent vital fire safety remediation to replace the existing spandrel panels into the unitised curtain walling system. This ambitious project involved the removal and replacement of over 5,500 combustible cladding panels across two 16-storey student accommodation towers. Metalline’s non-combustible ULTIMA 1 Insulated Spandrel Panels were selected to enhance fire performance, improve thermal efficiency, and provide a modern, seamless aesthetic.

The primary goal for this project was to upgrade the existing cladding with a solution that enhanced fire safety with A rated materials, improved long-term durability and thermal performance, and delivered a contemporary aesthetic vision. This included a specially manufactured two-tone colour designed to replicate the existing panels and blend into the London sky. A key challenge in this project was manufacturing bespoke panels that integrated smoothly into the existing building structure without requiring significant structural modifications. The building corners posed particular challenges, requiring precise engineering to ensure a perfect fit.

Given that the two towers were occupied throughout the project, the installation process was carefully planned and executed over a six-month period using both scaffold and cradle access. This ensured minimal disruption to residents while maintaining strict safety measures. The ULTIMA Insulated Spandrel Panels offer A1 & A2-s1,d0 fire classification according to BS EN13501-1. They have been tested for impact resistance to CWCT TN75/76 standards and fully tested for wind resistance to CWCT standards. The panels provide limitless colour options, allowing designers aesthetic flexibility while ensuring low maintenance, strength, and durability.
