TVS Group proves sound fit for PureGym

Opening new gyms in former retail premises can present unique structural and acoustic challenges. To find the best solution for one of its latest ventures in Weston Favell, PureGym turned to TVS Acoustics.

The successful opening of PureGym’s second fitness centre in Northampton, located in premises formerly occupied by two major retailers, presented some intriguing early challenges. Currently PureGym is the UK’s largest and fastest-growing gym chain, the first to attract over a million members and now approaching a landmark 300 clubs across the country. It offers its members state-of-the-art equipment as well as an exceptional mix of free-weight and functional training, and its new site at Weston Favell would be no exception.

However, early in the project’s development phase it was realised that the existing concrete floors of the 1970s shopping centre, where the gym was to be located, presented load limitations. Once installed the flooring would need to support heavy gym equipment and be capable of withstanding significant shock loading. Acoustic testing also confirmed high levels of structural noise transfer within the building. A heavy Acoustic Floating Floor would normally have been specified but the structure wouldn’t support the additional load.

Specialist help

To resolve the issues PureGym turned to TVS Acoustics, specialists in acoustic isolation and noise suppression and a division of the TVS Group (Total Vibration Solutions Ltd), which works extensively across the health and fitness sector. The company was chosen because of its comprehensive experience of designing and installing Acoustic Floating Floors for gyms, cinemas and bowling alleys.

The company’s cost-effective and extensively used TVS RESi FF Concrete Floating Floor System was considered too heavy for the project and its lightweight TVS RESi FF Dry Floating Floor System unlikely to withstand repeated heavy impacts from free-weights given the gym’s 24-hours, seven days a week opening.

Light yet strong

To overcome the weight and acoustic issues TVS Acoustics designed and supplied its TVS LWSA solution, a lightweight yet robust, shock-absorbing Acoustic Floor System. This modular structure is a third of the weight of a typical concrete Floating Floor utilised in gyms and its steel construction is strong enough to resist repeated heavy impacts. As a bonus for PureGym, the system was quick to install and its modular design meant it could be easily removed for use elsewhere if the gym needed to relocate at a future date.
