Stylishly cool and heavenly calm

The creation of a stylish new health and leisure centre, at the heart of Manchester’s most striking new residential development, called on the calming skills of acoustic and sports flooring specialists TVS Group.

At 64-storeys and over 200 metres, Deansgate Square’s tallest of four towers is the most visible part of the latest addition to Manchester’s towering skyline. But at the centre of this skyscraper cluster sits a fitness and wellness club covering 22,000 square feet and boasting a pool, gym, spin and yoga studios, a beauty spa and sports hall.

To safeguard residents of the new development from any unwanted noise that might emanate from the wide-ranging health and fitness facilities, Acoustic Consultants Fisher Acoustics and the main contractor, Renaker Build Ltd, called in acoustic and sports flooring specialists TVS Group.

“TVS was asked to recommend a specialist acoustic floating floor and sports flooring capable of isolating residents from the activity areas,” explained TVS Group Sales Director Andy Roberts. “That involved a wide range of facilities from fitness areas to a sports hall and studios for yoga and spinning classes. Acoustics were a key element of the project and we needed to meet stringent criteria to guarantee satisfaction for both residents in adjoining apartments and leisure users involved in different activities,” he added.

Sports hall & fitness studios

For the spacious, multi-use sports hall and adjoining fitness studios, a seamless polyurethane flooring system, TVS PU-Sport, was chosen, being both shock-absorbent and grippy for excellent aerobic performance and user comfort. Free-flowing zone markings were then added to separate activity spaces within the studios and heavy duty SPORTEC Style tiles were installed in the free weights zone to provide maximum impact resistance. To counter reverberation and acoustic issues within the large sports hall, TVS installed its custom-sized and colour-matching TVS Absorb Sport Panels.

Acoustic floating floor

For the High Intensity Interval Training facility and separate Yoga Studio, another flooring solution was required to offer maximum acoustic protection to residential properties. Here TVS installed a specialist Dry RESi Floating Floor system to dramatically reduce impact and airborne sound transmission. Such floors are quick to install and offer outstanding performance over the lifetime of a building.

Finally, TVS decoupled all the different elements of the fitness and health complex from one another, ensuring that, even with every activity area in use, there would be nothing to distract users, whether involved in high tempo training or the calm and tranquillity of a yoga class.
