Full House Renovation

In 2017, Steph and James Lynch purchased a property in Prestwick, South Ayrshire, and began a full house renovation. This project saw them strip the house back to the bare brick and start all over again by replacing all the plumbing, boiler and radiators, rewiring the house, installing a wood burning stove and fitting new solid oak parquet flooring.

A wrap around extension was added to create an open plan living, kitchen and dining area, which includes Bifolding doors, four pitched Velux windows and a large pane of glass. A utility room, extended hallway and downstairs toilet /shower room were all part of the side extension.

The exterior also went through a significant transformation, which included new windows, a driveway and full garden renovation, which features several planters made from around 20 sleepers.

With a lot of wood featuring both internally and externally, the couple needed to find a company that provides a high-quality finish that protects and enhances the wooden surface.

Osmo Inside

“We fitted solid oak parquet flooring in the living room and kitchen and the connecting hallway,” commented James. “With these rooms being two of the most used spaces in the house, we required a product that was very waterproof as well as hard wearing. I also wanted a product that would not overly change the appearance of the original, unfinished parquet flooring, and for this reason, we selected Polyx®-Oil 3062 Clear, Matt from Osmo UK.”

The surface was given a very light sand with a hand sander, before two coats of the finish were applied. Due to the size of area inside, it took a couple of hours to apply the finish and it was left overnight to dry.

Having consultation with the Osmo UK team through Instagram, James realised that this product could also be used on the solid wood kitchen worktops, so he went ahead and applied two coats of the Polyx®-Oil finish to this surface.

Offering all the professional features of a traditional oil-based finish, Polyx®-Oil allows the natural texture of the wood to still be apparent. Polyx®-Oil also offers a high level of wear protection that can occasionally be topped up without sanding when required. The finished surface is also spot repairable. Polyx®-Oil’s natural components penetrate deeply into the wood to create a micro-porous finish. This allows the wood to breathe naturally. After treatment, the wood is nourished from within and retains its elasticity. It becomes water repellent, stain resistant and more hard-wearing, because it meets the wood’s natural demands and does not crack, flake, peel or blister.

Osmo Outside

“When we turned out attention to the garden, we purchased new sleepers to create planters around the outside space,” adds James. “We have all type of weather up in Scotland, so we knew that we needed a finish to protect the sleepers to ensure they don’t fade from sunlight or get damaged from the rain or snow,” said James. “We were working with Core Landscapes for the garden renovations and they told us that they had an amazing product that would work wonders on the sleepers. They pulled out a tin of Osmo UV-Protection-Oil 420 Clear, and having been so pleased with the results of the Osmo finish internally, we knew that this was the right choice for the sleepers.”

Wanting a rustic look, two coats of UV-Protection-Oil were applied without sanding the surface. It took around 30 minutes to apply the finish and the surface was dry within a few hours. James commented that the finish was simple to use and that he loves the fact that it is very hard wearing and waterproof.

Osmo UV-Protection-Oil is a quality finish that protects, maintains, and restores exterior wood. It has been specially designed to protect the wood, leaving it looking in top condition throughout summer months. Based on natural oil, it does not crack, flake, peel or blister. This natural protective finish has been produced to delay the greying effect on exterior wood due to exposure to the sun, whilst maintaining the wood’s natural aesthetics.

“We are so happy with the end result both internally and externally,” concludes James. “The parquet flooring was laid and finished a couple of years ago. We mop the floor once a week with a damp mop and it still looks good as new. The sleepers look fantastic. I love it when it rains as you can actually see the rain droplets run off the sleeper. We will definitely be using Osmo UK products again in the future. We were very impressed with the quality of the product. It’s a product that I trust, and we love the results.”
